According to club sponsor Ms. Wilcox, Best Buddies’ goal is to lead the charge in promoting inclusion, kindness, and meaningful friendships for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Best Buddies has created a welcoming and supportive environment where students of all abilities can connect, grow, and thrive together.
Throughout the 2024–2025 school year, the club organized a series of impactful events, including Friendship Walks, Potlucks, and the Friendship Match Party. These events not only brought students together but also raised awareness about the importance of acceptance and inclusion in everyday school life.
“Best Buddies is more than just a club—it’s a family,” said 2024-2025 club president senior Dulce Zuniga. “We work hard to ensure that no one feels left out. Everyone deserves a friend, and everyone deserves to be celebrated for who they are.”
This year’s Match Party kicked off the buddy pairings with warmth and celebration. Students decorated the event space with colorful banners and participated in team-building games that helped new friendships bloom. “The match parties are always one of the most exciting events,” said 1st Vice President Sinayel Prieto, a senior. “It’s where so many lifelong connections begin.”
Miami High’s chapter also rallied together for the Best Buddies Friendship Walk, a national movement that raises awareness and funds for inclusion. The school’s team walked side-by-side with families, faculty, and volunteers, raising over $1,000 to support Best Buddies programming both locally and globally. “It was powerful to see so many people showing up to support our friends and this cause,” said Corresponding Secretary Natalia Castellanos
The club also provides leadership opportunities for students with and without disabilities, helping members build empathy, confidence, and communication skills. According to the president for 2025-2026 Ruth Henriquez, with growing participation and support from faculty, parents, and the broader community, the chapter is planning to expand its efforts next year, including peer mentoring programs and volunteer outreach events.
