As of right now, the people of Gaza are living through extremely poor conditions. With buildings, homes, and memories destroyed, families remain grieving for the loss of their loved ones.
According to a November 29, 2025, news report from the BBC, “Gaza’s Health Ministry says the Palestinian death toll is now 70,100 and that more than 350 of those deaths have happened since the 10 October ceasefire.”
The Israeli military launched its offensive on Gaza in response to the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed, and 251 others were held hostage.
Due to the ongoing crisis and the after effects of all that has happened even with ceasefire in process, the people of Gaza undoubtedly need support.
What Do People Think About This?
Mr. Amaya, our school’s TV production teacher, says, “With our position in the international community, I think that the U.S. does take a role in mediating or assessing the situation because we have the resources, the power, and the influence.”
On the other hand, Kaylee Zapata, a sophomore, explains, “I don’t think the U.S. government should act against what is happening in Palestine because I feel that it may cause political tension inside of the U.S. which could endanger U.S. citizens and our country.”
Is This a War or Genocide?
Given the effects of the Gaza war in Palestine, some people might think that what happened there is a genocide. Sophomore Mia Garcia expresses, “I think the term genocide is the right term to use when speaking about Palestine’s current situation because people are starving, being killed, and cannot even sleep peacefully at night because they do not know if they will wake up or not. That is just not the way any human should be living.”
Although many people feel this way, others may avoid using the term genocide when speaking about the circumstances in Palestine. Many people online express their political opinion towards this matter and believe that the state Palestine is in right now does not meet the criteria or definition for the word genocide.
According to a January 8, 2025, news report from The Times of Isreal, John Kirby (a White House National Security Council spokesperson) sais that although “civilian casualties” in Gaza were “highly unacceptable,” he suggested that this does not automatically equal a genocide.
Another reason might be because of the fear of controversy. Because public criticism is so common now, telling an opinion may lead to accusations of backlash, bias, and may even bring consequences into your personal life.
Over all, the use of the term “genocide” completely depends on the individual and how they interpret the situation.
Despite all these ongoing debates about the matter, the people of Gaza are undoubtedly in an endangered situation, and without support from those who can provide it, there unfortunately is not much they can do.
