Today AI is a large phenomenon everywhere throughout the world, one of the major ones being in the school environments.
Some students see AI being misused. Sophomore Daniella Alvarez says, “Most students use AI with the intention to cheat on their schoolwork, and this negatively impacts their learning because it hinders their ability to think.”
Junior Briannah Correa said, “I believe most students use AI in a negative way for education. They cheat and most the time don’t learn from it.”
Teachers have their own opinions about AI in the classrooms. Art teacher Ms. Lee said, “I’m not against AI completely, as long as you use it responsibly, but if you simply use it to get it to do work for you, or make ideas for you, that’s when I’m against it. I agree with teachers enhancing their lessons with AI, but doing it all for you is wrong.”
Math teacher Mr. Urusuno says, “AI is still too new, it could be used both in a good and bad way. But it’s still too new to say otherwise.” Similarly, yearbook teacher Ms. Diaz says, “I honestly haven’t encountered anything in my class yet with AI, but eventually I know I will have to address it and expect it.”
To many students at Miami High, AI has many benefits. Maiya Rene said, “I think it’s helpful to explain processes step by step and help students understand the work better.”
Junior Alan Moya said, “Some people see AI as some sort of abuse to give all the answers to, but it can be helpful. It helped me with my history assignment, and it explained it to me thoroughly.”
One of the biggest debates related to the use of AI in the school environment is whether students rely too heavily on AI.
Junior Ashley Hernandez replied, “Yes, kids are getting too dependent. They don’t open books anymore, and if AI was gone for even an hour, students wouldn’t even be able to write on a piece of paper. Most students can’t do anything on their own anymore.”
Senior Karelin Beltre said, “Nowadays they can’t get any work done or even complete work or an essay without AI.”
