Have you ever used art to show how you feel? Many students at Miami High do so to express emotions they can’t put into words. Art helps them share what’s inside.
Ms. Lee, who teaches painting and drawing, explained that students often express emotions through color, imagery, and style without needing words.
“Art is visual, so you don’t have to say what you feel, you can just show it,” she said. She also mentioned that many of her students describe her class as a “de-stressor,” a place where they can take a breath from everything else happening in their day.
When creating art, many students feel more in control of their emotions because it gives them space to focus on what they’re feeling. Junior Jonathan Sanchez says, “Art lets me show my emotions visually, and I feel in control because I can choose the colors and details that match my mood.” Sophomore Mia Garcia added, “Even if I don’t know exactly what I’m feeling, putting it on paper helps me understand myself better.”
Teachers at Miami High see how much art helps students express emotions they might hide in other classes. Ms. Diaz, digital graphic design and photography teacher, said that her goal is to make assignments fun so students feel comfortable showing emotion through their work. She believes students put more of themselves into art when the environment feels open and not judged.
“When students feel free to experiment,” said Ms. Diaz, “that’s when they really start showing who they are through their art.”
Other students find inspiration by watching the creativity around them. Sophomore Miriam Ortega said, “Seeing other people style their outfits a certain way that makes them stand out inspired me because it made me want to feel that same confidence inside.”
Photography students often get inspired by things they see on social media. Junior Anthony Rivera states, “Sometimes I’ll see a professional photoshoot on Instagram, and I’ll be motivated to just point my camera and see what comes out.”
