Miami’s diversity is seen every day through language, food, and traditions, and immigration plays a major role in daily life for many students in Miami.
According to students interviewed at Miami High, immigration affects families, schools, and neighborhoods across the city. Maria Hernandez, 12th grade, shared, “Immigrants bring new ideas, food, and music. It makes Miami feel alive.” Her comment shows how immigration helps shape the culture of Miami.
Reasons Families Come to the United States
Many students believe families come to the United States in search of better opportunities. According to students, immigrants often leave their home countries because of violence, poverty, or lack of education. Junior Luis Martinez explained that many parents sacrifice a lot so their children can have a safer life and a better future.
Immigrants and Hard Work
Many students believe undocumented immigrants are hardworking and dedicated to their families. Majority of students interviewed said undocumented parents often work long hours to support their children and provide basic needs. A 10th grade student who wished to remain anonymous said families who follow rules and try to be part of the community deserve a fair chance to stay. Other students agreed that effort and responsibility should be considered.
Some students also understand why people have concerns about undocumented immigration. One 11th grader who chose to remain anonymous explained that some people feel the immigration system needs clearer rules so it is fair for everyone.
Fear and Stress of Being Undocumented
Living without legal documents can create fear and emotional stress for families. According to responses from students across different grade levels, undocumented families often worry about being separated. Junior Jasmine Lee explained, “Being undocumented is scary because you never know what could happen, even when you just want to go to school or work.” This fear can affect students’ focus and performance in school.
Improving the Immigration System
Students believe changes to the immigration system could help families feel more secure. The majority of students interviewed said a clearer and fairer process would reduce fear in communities. One anonymous junior added that legal protection would help students focus on school and plan for their future instead of worrying every day.
Why Students Should Learn About Immigration
According to student opinions, understanding different experiences allows teens to better support classmates. Aiden Johnson, a freshman, said, ‘’Learning about immigration helps students see issues from different perspectives, Immigration is not just a topic in the news; it affects real people in schools and communities every day.”
