Many teens today have part-time jobs while they are still in school. Some students work to make their own money, help their families, or save for things they want. Others feel that working during the school year can be stressful and hard to manage. Trying to keep up with homework, tests, and work shifts can sometimes feel overwhelming. This is why many people question whether part-time jobs are truly worth it for teens.
Some students believe having a job is a good experience. Junior Nilah Taylor, who works at Publix, said she got the job because she wanted to start making her own money and learn how to be independent. She shared that even though balancing school and work can be tiring, the experience has helped her become more responsible.
Junior Janin Reyes, who works at Sephora, decided to get a job so she could pay for her personal expenses and save money for the future. She said working has helped her learn how to manage her time better and stay organized between school and work.
However, not every student agrees. Junior, Melody Brazoban, who does not currently have a job, said she prefers to focus on school and keep her grades strong. She believes that adding a job right now might be overwhelming and could affect her schoolwork. For her, education is the top priority.
Teacher and School Leader Perspectives
Teachers and school leaders also shared their thoughts. Mr. Bernard, a teacher, shared that part-time jobs can teach students important life lessons, such as responsibility and commitment. However, he believes school should always come first. Mr. Arscott, the assistant principal, agreed and explained that students should not let work interfere with their education or attendance. They both feel that balance is very important.
Parent Perspective
Parents also have opinions about teens working. Olivia Whites, a parent said she supports teens having jobs as long as they remain responsible and keep their grades up. She believes working can help teens grow and learn important skills for the future. At the same time, she thinks parents should make sure their children are not becoming too stressed.
