Between homework, tests, extracurricular activities, and trying to spend time with friends and family or also working, it could be overwhelming. Many students feel the pressure to do good at school while also wanting to enjoy their teenage years and take care of their mental health. They need to learn how to manage their time wisely and set priorities. This could help them organize themselves.
Managing school stress while still being available for their personal life requires fun time management and set boundaries. Junior Montserrat Cerrato says, “I manage my time by doing homework in small parts and taking short breaks,” because it helps her stay focused. She adds, “Set a time to stop working so you can relax and do things you enjoy.”
Senior Triana Suarez focuses more on establishing limits. She said, “I set my boundaries between school and my life. When I need to do schoolwork, I try to do it before I get home, like when I’m on a free period, or I study as much as I can when I’m at school. When I’m at home, I focus on myself or any extra study I need to, but I set boundaries between school and my fun life, and that way my whole life isn’t about school, and I’m not as stressed.”
Balancing schoolwork and personal life, you must have careful time management. Junior Osmel Diaz explains, “I separate my duties to maintain a steady pace on both sides, and to make sure I maintain an even balance.” He also says, “It helps me stay organized and less stressed because I know when to focus on school and when to focus on myself planning out my time and not mixing everything together. I feel more in control and able to give enough attention to both parts of my life without falling behind.”
Staying organized with schoolwork and activities outside of school requires planning and consistency. Junior Brianna Sobalvarro said, “I try to stay as organized as possible, especially when I have a job and I’m trying to balance school, but I write things down and set reminders and try to finish on time or a week before. With my responsibilities at home, I always clean as I go, so I’m not overwhelmed.”
Junior Allison Romero stated, “Writing assignments in a planner or app makes it easier to keep track of everything, and setting aside specific times for homework and free time keeps things balanced.”
Feeling overwhelmed by school and personal responsibilities can be challenging. Junior Montserrat Cerrato says, “I finish schoolwork first, then relax after, because it helps me not stress about things later. Getting everything done early makes me feel less overwhelmed, and it allows me to enjoy my free time without worrying about unfinished work.”
Unexpected changes in a schedule can be stressful, but senior Stephen Solis explains how he handles them. “If something unexpected comes up,” he said. “I reschedule my tasks and focus on the most urgent ones first. I stay flexible and understand that not everything will always go perfectly.”
Staying on top of schoolwork while also managing personal life can help reduce procrastination. Senior Alondra Canales explains, “I’ve found that it helps to consciously remind myself to stay focused on my schoolwork while also recognizing that my personal life deserves just as much attention and care. By being mindful of both priorities, it’s easier to stay on track without neglecting either one.”
Keeping a healthy balance without falling behind in school means knowing when to work and when to rest. Junior Cristian Duarte explains, “I also make sure to give myself time to rest, because not every moment should be stressful. Sometimes all you need is a break and some preparation, and everything will be done. Outside of school, it’s important to still have time for yourself.”
