Many high school students today are juggling hours of homework on top of long school days, school activities, and responsibilities at home. Mandatory homework leads to stress, lack of sleep, and less personal growth. While some argue that homework builds discipline, the reality is that too much homework can negatively impact students’ mental health.
When assignments pile up every night, we often feel overwhelmed and stressed, which can lead to anxiety. Instead of having time to relax, spend time with family, go out with friends, or get enough sleep, many students are constantly focused on finishing homework or having to worry about grades.
Over time, this pressure can lower motivation and even cause students to lose interest in school all together. Having a lot of homework can also affect your self-esteem, as students may feel like they are never doing enough or they are doing too much. Homework is meant to support learning, but too much of it can harm well-being.
After a full day at school, many students go home only to spend hours trying to complete their homework, leaving little room for social activities or quality time with their loved ones. This can lead to feeling isolated or disconnected, especially when we miss hangouts, events, or even just little conversations at home with our family. This lack of balance can affect relationships, as friends and family may feel distant. While homework is important, family and friends are also important.
Schools without mandatory homework would likely be less stressful and more balanced for students. Without having the pressure of nightly assignments, students could use their time after school to relax or spend time with family and friends.
Teachers should put more effort into having students do their work together in class, so they understand the material more. I often learn more at school than at home while doing schoolwork because we have direct support from teachers and a good environment that helps us stay focused. In the classroom, I can ask questions, participate, discuss, and receive immediate feedback which will help me understand the material and what the teacher is talking about more.
However, learning can be more challenging due to distractions, lack of motivation, or having no help when needed for your homework. I also think some students might struggle with being disciplined or keeping up with practicing the work on their own.
Homework can also create unfair situations because not every student has the same support or resources at home. Some students may have jobs, family responsibilities, or limited access to quiet study spaces, making it harder for them to complete assignments successfully.
In my opinion, mandatory homework does more harm than good. I understand that homework is meant to help us as students practice what we learned in class, but too much of it can become stressful and overwhelming.
5 negative effects from mandatory homework
- Mandatory homework can increase student stress and anxiety, especially when students already have busy schedules
- Too much homework can take away time from family, friends, sports, and hobbies
- Students who don’t have help or resources at home may struggle more with homework than others.
- Large amounts of homework can cause burnout and make students lose motivation to work.
- Homework after long school days can lead to exhaustion, making it harder to learn the next day
